How to choose a healthy bread

Don't we all just love bread?! There's nothing better than a warm piece of bread smeared with a delicious spread and topped with your favorite fillings... But can a healthy diet really include bread? According to health and fitness expert and Biggest loser trainer Libby Babet, it can.

First of all, Libby advocates using principles instead of rules. Try and set a principle that includes maybe not having bread every single day, but every once in a while when you feel like it, go for it! Second, it's all about choosing the right bread. Here is a summary of Libby's top tips for on what to look for when picking a bread.

  1.  Chose a chewy bread that is a bit hard to pull apart-This generally means that the bread is packed with wholegrain ingredients and has not been processed beyond recognition.
  2. Get grains in there-Make sure you can see the grains in the loaf and if you can't, simply go for a darker bread.
  3. Wholegrain ingredients-When you check the ingredients list, make sure wholegrain ingredients have been used,
  4. Try an alternative-Go a gluten-free bread or get a sprouted grain loaf, there's plenty of options that are not wheat based which might mean a less processed bread with a higher fibre content.
